Metalworking means cutting, forming, or joining metal. For example, the most common processes include welding, drilling, stamping, punching, milling, and forging. Each metalworking process uses a different type of machine to shape the metal into a specific shape.

Metalworking, milling, and drilling are similar in that they all use a rotating tool to make holes in metal. Milling uses a multi-tip tool to create non-circular holes and approach the part from any direction. Drilling, on the other hand, requires one or more drill bits to cut perpendicularly along the long axis of the tool to create circular holes of any depth.

During welding, a shielding gas such as nitrogen or helium is blown onto the joint to prevent residual oxygen in the atmosphere from causing corrosion/rusting of the metal in the weld joint.

Metal stamping involves a variety of metal forming operations. Punching, bending, pressing, folding, and stretching can all be used to produce the final part. The metal stamping process uses a punch press equipped with custom tooling and dies to produce the shape or pattern of a part. The stamping process has tighter tolerances than metalworking processes. It is a fast and cost-effective process for producing metal parts in large quantities.
Metalworking creates three-dimensional metal parts through cutting, bending, and/or other assembly processes. Highly specialized equipment such as CNC laser cutters, CNC press brakes, CNC turret presses, and welding is often required. Tooling costs associated with stamping can be high, so metalworking is often a more economical way to produce parts in small batches. Since part designs need to be modified, machining processes do not require tooling changes, so they offer greater design flexibility than stamping processes.
